Arthritis Care Foundation (ACF)

What are Rheumatic Diseases?

Rheumatic diseases in one form or other are the most common cause of physical disability all over the world. These diseases not only affect bones and joints but can also involve any organ system of the body including brain, heart, lungs, eye, skin, kidneys and nerves. They affect all age groups including children and both sexes.

What is Rheumatology?

Rheumatology, which is a sub-speciality of Medicine, has progressed rapidly in the developed world in the past decade, with latest insights into the mechanism of a wide variety of Rheumatic Diseases. This has lead to effective treatments which if initiated early during the disease process have markedly reduced death and disability. Unfortunately the experts in the field of Rheumatology in our country are very few. Currently there are only 25 qualified rheumatologists in Pakistan for a population of 180 Million, which is extremely deficient keeping in view the international requirement of 1 Rheumatologist per 80,000 population.

About Arthritis Care Foundation (ACF)

The founders’ community service activities were launched in 1998 with the establishment of Rheumatology Clinics at Akhtar Mubarik Referral Centre and Fatima Memorial Hospital(FMH) in collaboration with AFJOG and FMH respectively. These services were expanded to Behbud Association in 2005. These facilities provide free consultations, diagnostics and medications as well as physiotherapy facilities to indigent arthritis patients.

Arthritis Care Foundation was formally registered in 2010, as a step towards realization of the dream of Dr Nighat Mir Ahmad and Dr Sumaira Farman Raja for expanding the existing services to the underprivileged for:

  • Provision of latest treatments, which are highly effective but expensive e.g. Biologic Therapies
  • Provision of artificial joints for all age groups ranging from children to the elderly
  • Establishing an endowment fund for providing scholarships to trainees in Rheumatology thereby addressing the critical shortage of qualified rheumatologists in the country.
  • Addressing the need for an infrastructure for physician and public awareness programs, as well as patient education and support group activities
